Vista: The Best Suburb of San Diego

San Diego County is more than just the city of San Diego. Although we think that America’s Finest City is a great place to live, the suburbs that surround it are excellent in many ways as well. Vista is part of the San Diego – Carlsbad, California Metropolitan Area. It is not a tiny neighborhood off the main road. Although it is not on the coast, Vista is around 7 miles from the Pacific Ocean and has a population of over 100,000. There are numerous elementary schools and a large business park in Vista. When looking for a place to raise a family, the homebuyer should give it significant consideration.

History

The history of Vista begins with the dinosaurs. In ancient times, Vista was an inland sea with prehistoric fish. The evidence of this sea was found when the freeway and the business park were developed. Historically, the Vista area was settled by a series of Indian groups over a period of several hundred years. Several archeological sites still exist, including a pictograph known as the “Indian Rock.” Also in the 1500’s, Spanish explorers passed through future Vista.

The area changed completely in 1798 with the founding of the San Luis Rey Mission. The local Native Americans were forced to live and work at and for the Mission. Vista was used mostly for grazing land.

The age of the Missions lasted until the independence of Mexico from Spain, the secularization of the Missions and the subsequent granting of land ownership by the Mexican Government to a variety of residents, starting about 1835. This became the time of the “Ranchos.”

Quality health care is of prominent concern to every community and its citizenry, and Vistans are indeed fortunate to have convenient access to some of the most outstanding health care facilities in the United States. Tri-City Medical Center, a 385-bed, acute-care district hospital offers a full range of primary care and medical-surgical services that include emergency medicine, cardiovascular and imaging services, oncology, a family childbirth center, plus hospital and home care. Tri-City Medical Center has been designated as one of “100 Top Hospitals: Regional Benchmarks for Success” three years in a row by HCIA Mercer.

The Vista Community Clinic is a private, nonprofit community clinic dedicated to providing quality healthcare and health education to those who experience economic, social or cultural barriers when accessing health care. Incorporating a full spectrum of both treatment and prevention services, the clinic has been nationally recognized for its excellent health promotion programs. The “Fund for Moms” project, which offers interest-free revolving loans for prenatal care and delivery to families without medical insurance, has received three awards in recent years from Social Compact, the Fannie Mae Foundation and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

In total, the Vista Community Clinic holds more than 50 government contracts including a Medi-Cal HMO under which the clinic provides managed care for its members. Also located within a short driving distance from downtown Vista are many other leading state-of-the-art medical facilities.

First-Rate Educational Opportunities

The quest for knowledge and enrichment is apparent in Vista, as evidenced by the fact that this city hosts the largest branch in the San Diego County Library system, and is also the most widely used facility among all of the 32 county library branches. This 30,300 square foot library has the distinction of being a regional reference center for the county. It also has a full-service business reference center, unlimited Internet access, an active book club, and special programming to satisfy people of all ages. It includes storytelling, crafts and live entertainment which is provided by local musicians and performers. The Vista Library houses a children’s library, a teen section, a conference room, a quiet study area, plus a community room that is available at no-cost to nonprofit organizations, and for private use at a reasonable fee. The Vista Library is open seven days each week.

Recognizing that a sound educational foundation is the greatest predictor of economic success, the Vista Unified School District (VUSD) has enjoyed a long- standing reputation as one of the finest school districts in the nation, with its teachers being among the highest paid. Currently, there are eleven elementary schools, five middle schools and five high schools in the district. However, with extraordinary population growth, the need to build more schools within the district posed a crucial challenge to the community’s taxpayers.

Many Accommodating Place of Worship

Religion is acknowledged as “the soul of the community.” The city’s first place of worship was the Community Church of Vista, still actively attended after 70 years following its dedication in 1932. Today, Vista has more than 60 churches, synagogues, temples and mosques that serve the spiritual needs of the diverse English, Spanish, Chinese, Korean, Vietnamese and Samoan speaking citizenry. The congregations’ devotion to the community, as evidenced by their ecumenical efforts to care for Vista’s homeless, provide inspiration for the challenges of today, and promise for tomorrow.

Alta Vista Botanical Gardens

The Alta Vista Botanical Gardens are a verdant green environment with numerous distinctively developed parts, and it is situated on Vale Terrace Drive in Vista. Cactus, agave, and aloe are just a few of the native plant species found in the gardens; other species come from other arid regions of the world, like Africa and the Mediterranean.

The gardens are lovely locations for a leisurely morning or afternoon stroll and are brimming with modern artwork created by regional artists. The venue features a range of live entertainment and special events all through the year, including music, supervised yoga lessons, food, wine, and art festivals.

Broadway Theater

The Broadway Theater on East Broadway in Vista, which bills itself as “San Diego County’s biggest small theater,” has been a well-liked location for live entertainment since it first opened its doors back in 2004. The little community theater is known for staging several annual musicals, plays, and kid-friendly productions.

Vista Historical Society Museum at Rancho Minerva

Rancho Minerva is a home built nearly a century ago by a Greek immigrant, who farmed the area when it was largely rural and agricultural. By the standards of the day, the two-story ranch home was relatively elegant. It’s now a public museum managed by the city’s historical society.

The home was constructed with bricks made with local clay. Its stunningly white façade and red tile roof make it a particularly vibrant example of Spanish mission-style architecture. Volunteer docents offer guided tours regularly, and the facility hosts a number of annual events as well.

Wave Waterpark

The climate in Southern California can be nothing short of stifling, especially during the summer. Fortunately, San Diego County often has milder temperatures than Los Angeles, but there are still occasions when a few hours spent splashing around in cool water are hard to top.

The Wave Waterpark, which is situated on Wave Drive in Vista Village, is crammed with features that frequently keep guests entertained for hours. Numerous slides, a lazy river, and other sections designated for lap swimming are highlights. St. Mark Golf Club
