Living in Rancho Bernardo

The first of inland North County's planned communities.

Rancho Bernardo, the first of inland North County’s planned communities began as a ranch. A winding two-lane road was the only connection to San Diego. The original settlement in the area, Bernardo Village, now lies under the waters of Lake Hodges to the north. In 1960s, development began in the planned community of Rancho Bernardo.

In the next decade a four-lane highway was laid through the area, linking it to San Diego and Escondido, and development began in earnest. Although part of the City of San Diego, Rancho Bernardo has its own Town Council, as well as a volunteer advisory panel to the City’s Planning Board.

Although two of the community, with the average age being under 40. Each of its neighborhoods has its own recreation center, of which every neighborhood resident is a member. As a result, amenities range from junior Olympic-sized swimming pools to meeting rooms, work-out facilities sports courts, and even, in some cases, woodsheds and photo darkrooms.

 

In addition, Lake Hodges recreation area offers fishing and boating, and the Rancho Bernardo Community Park, part of the City of San Diego parks system, offers playing fields, hiking trails, and a permanent sports center. Homes range from single family to apartments and condominiums, with estates of more than an acre in The Trails.

The heart of the community offers a range of retail stores and financial institutions, augmented by smaller neighborhood shopping plazas.

Just north of Lake Hodges is Westfield North County, one of the largest regional shopping malls in the county. Rancho Bernardo’s Business Park has attracted international companies, drawn by the lure of the climate, the Poway Unified School District and a community nationally recognized for its healthy lifestyle.

The golf course of the five-star internationally acclaimed Rancho Bernardo Inn winds through several of the area neighborhoods. The fairways of a private course, as well as those of a 27-hole executive club, wind through the community.

Living in Rancho Bernardo

Rancho Bernardo is in San Diego County and is one of the best places to live in California. Living in Rancho Bernardo offers residents a dense suburban feel and most residents own their homes. The Poway School District is a national leader in K-12 public education. The Poway Unified School District is located in northern San Diego County, California. PUSD operates 25 elementary schools (K-5), one elementary & middle school combination (TK-8th), six middle schools (6-8), one continuation high school, five comprehensive high schools (9-12), and one adult school. Twenty-six schools are located in the city of San Diego; twelve schools in the city of Poway. The District serves over 36,000 students and is the third largest school district in the county.
