The City in the Country

Poway is situated in the Coastal foothills Inland North County area is close enough to the coast to enjoy its cooling breezes, but far enough inland to avoid much of its fog. An eight to ten-lane Interstate freeway links the communities to San Diego and to Escondido in the north.  State roads lead to the ocean, mountains and deserts.

Aside from the natural beauty of the region with its rolling, rock-strewn hills and meandering valleys, it boasts one of the country’s best school districts, well-planned communities, convenient shopping, a low crime rate, outstanding recreational facilities for all ages, and a comfortable year-round climate.

Poway began as a small farm community on the stage line that connected San Diego to the rapidly-growing cities to the north. It grew slowly until developers began to create the planned communities of Rancho Bernardo and Rancho Peñasquitos to its west. Fearing that Poway would lose its rural flavor, in 1980, residents of the area incorporated into a city and adopted a slow-growth policy that maintained its well-deserved title of “The City in the Country”. As a result of their foresight, the city is financially stable and offers residents an array of recreational and entertainment facilities.

The city’s greatest pride is its 800-seat state-of-the-art Poway Center For The Performing Arts located on the campus of Poway High School. Its season includes a wide variety of name entertainment, dance, and theatrical productions.

Lake Poway, located in Poway’s Northern hills, offers fishing, boating, campgrounds, picnic areas, playing fields and miles of trails. The 700-acre-plus BlueSky Ecological Reserve, adjacent to the lake, includes a wide variety of interpretive programs as well as a beautiful riparian setting for native wildlife.

Most neighborhoods are within walking distance of pocket parks with a variety of playground equipment and amenities. The Community Center offers swimming, playgrounds, permanent playing fields, as well as a large multi-purpose room and stage.

The Weingart Senior Center shares the site and provides a myriad of activities, as well as hot meals, for Poway’s Seniors. In addition to the private 18-hole golf course in the City’s Northern hills, Poway is surrounded by more than 72 public and private golf courses with easy driving distance.

Nearly every type of housing is available in Poway’s rock-strewn hills and valleys-from horse property to estates, moderately-priced homes, and even condominiums. It is part of the nationally-recognized Poway Unified School District and offers high-quality private schooling as well.

The South Poway Business Par, located in the hills to the south of the City, is one of the largest commercial developments  in the state. With easy access to other parts of the country, it has attracted major businesses, as well as start-up companies to the area.
